Description
Podocnemis unifilis. A long-lived turtle native to the Amazon rivers, only the males and juvenile females have yellow head markings. These turtles spend time basking along the riverbanks and in the calm waters of big rivers and streams. They avoid fast-moving waters. They are found in tributaries and large lakes, naturally calm waters. During flood season, they may venture into flooded forests or floodplain lakes. This species can be recognized by its black or brown oval carapace (upper shell)and the yellow spots on the side of its head. These side-necked turtles cannot retract their head into their shell. They rather bend their necks sideways to tuck their heads under the rim of their shells.
