Description
Zingiber are aromatic rhizomatous perennials. It is a plant native to Southeast Asia and belongs to the same family as ginger or turmeric. Like most of the plants in this genus, its leaves are oblong in shape, longer than wide, especially at the tips. In ideal circumstances, the plant can reach a height of more than 4.5 meters. Water collected from the bracts of the inflorescence is used by the Orang Aslis of the Temuan tribe (Negri Sembilan, Malaysia) to treat conjunctivitis. Its main use is medicinal, it is prepared by crushing the leaves into a thick paste and then applying it topically to treat inflammations and burns. Academic research has found that the plant has antimicrobial properties and significant concentrations of the enzyme Zerumbone synthase, which may be effective in the treatment of colon cancer.
